Why do GM vehicles get rod knocks all the time?

Why do GM cars like Cavaliers and Sunfires get rod knocks even when you properly maintain them, also the new 2008 - 2010 GM vehicles get them too, a friend this morning on his way to work developed a knock on his Traverse, why does this happen? I only hear them on GM vehicles not Chrysler or Ford or even foreign vehicles...
